Thursday, February 21, 2008

Salem's basketball season came to a close in the first round of the 3A-1 East District Tournament at Bergman.

The Hounds were stopped by Cave City 64-57 Feb. 11, while the Lady Greyhounds fell to the Yellville-Summit Lady Panthers 51-48.

In boys' action, the Greyhounds grabbed an early lead against Cave City and despite a big push by Cave City, Salem remained in front 33-32 at the half.

But in the third period, the Cavemen moved in front by outscoring the Hounds 14-7.

Shane Smith and Adam Montgomery fired in 18 points apiece for Salem, while Logan Henley added 14, Garrett Brickey four and J.W. Blevins three.

Dalton Bell paced Cave City with a game-high 20 points, with Aaron Holley adding 14 points, seven assists and six boards. Ethan Smith finished with 11, Jonathan Hunter eight, Justin Felts six, Seth Foreman three and Tyler Little two.

In the fourth-seeded Lady Hounds' clash with fifth-seeded Yellville-Summit, the Lady Panthers pushed in front quickly, racing to an 18-8 lead after one.

Salem pushed back and cut into the lead, trailing by seven, down 30-23 at intermission.

The Lady Panthers stood firm and took a 44-35 lead into the final period.

The Lady Greyhounds had one last charge and opened the fourth on a 9-zip run.

As it turns out, Yellville-Summit was able to withstand this run and hang on to post a three-point win over Salem.

Jamie James tallied 17 points to lead the Lady Greyhounds, with Jenny Neal adding 12 and Stephanie McCullough 10. Laci Long finished with four, Chelsea Maguffee three and Leslie Taylor two.
