Sales tax ready for voters

Wednesday, October 26, 2005

OREGON COUNTY -- There will be one issue on the Nov. 8 special election ballot in Oregon County. That is the half-cent sales tax in the city of Thayer.

The Thayer Community Betterment Association requested the Thayer City Council to place the tax on the ballot. The council and Mayor Allen Deckard have not taken a stand regarding the issue as reported, but agreed the residents of the community should make the decision about the tax and said they would support the decision made by the voters.

Oregon County Clark Gary Hensley reminds county residents that only the residents in the Thayer city limits will be allowed to vote on the tax issue. "We have had several calls in our office from people around the county wanting to know if they can vote on the issue. Some said because they will be paying the tax they think they should be included in making the decision on the issue. That's not how it works. Only Thayer residents will be allowed to vote in this election," Hensley said.

He said absentee voting is currently under way at his office in the courthouse. "Thayer residents will be able to request an absentee ballot by mail through Nov. 2. Those absentee ballots will have to be back in our office by Nov. 8," the clerk said.

Thayer residents will also be able to vote early at his office through Nov. 7 at 5 p.m.

Hensley said there will be only one polling place open in the city of Thayer Nov 8. "Thayer Fun and Friends will be open for voting from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.," Hensley said.
