Sign thieves learn punishment

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

District Court Judge Jim Short handed down punishments to the two men involved in the May 30 destruction of multiple 9-1-1 county road signs and mailboxes along Young Road in Salem.

Derek Batterton, 18, and Kevin Fowler, 18, both of Salem were fined $3,000 restitution, one year probation, 20 days of community service and random drug testing, during Fulton County District Court July 11, according to District Clerk Cathy Burke.

Fowler, who will be a senior at Salem High School in the upcoming school year, was also court ordered to return home with his legal guardian after having lived in an unsupervised environment since shortly after he turned 18.

The vandalism was found around 6:30 a.m. on May 30 when a combination of damaged 9-1-1 county road signs, mail boxes and empty beer receptacles were found piled in the middle of the road.

Batterton and Fowler were arrested in connection with the vandalism June 7.

Neither had any prior run-ins with the law before the May 30 incident, according to Fulton County Sheriff Walter Dillinger.
