Fire survivor arrested again

Thursday, January 10, 2008

ALTON -- One of the three men who survived the fire in the jail at the Oregon County Courthouse last September has been arrested once again.

According to a probable cause statement from the Oregon County Sheriff's Office, Cody Davis, 19, Alton, is in the Thayer City Jail charged with felony resisting arrest, interfering with an arrest and a probation violation.

Oregon County Deputy Randy Vater said on Dec. 29 he responded to a call from a resident on AA Highway that gunshots had been fired.

Vater said when he arrived at AA Highway and County Road 103, he encountered a man walking down the road that he recognized as Davis.

Vater said he asked Davis if he had heard the gunshots and Davis responded that he had heard them near the sawmill. The officer then informed him there was a warrant for his arrest on a probation violation.

Vater said as he began to pat Davis down and handcuffed him, he escaped, running down AA Highway. Vater said a foot chase pursued and Davis was later arrested.

The officer said before Davis ran he found several 22-caliber long rifle bullets in one pocket of Davis' overalls and a lock-blade knife in another pocket.

A court date for Davis has not been been set.

On Dec. 24, Thayer Police Officer Michael Bunting said he responded to a call about a parked vehicle on a dead-end street behind Town and Country Grocery Store in Thayer.

Bunting said the vehicle was a 1995 Ford Windstar van with Arkansas tags.

Bunting said he ran the tags on the vehicle and learned it had been stolen from Texarkana, Texas.

The van was not seen again until the officer said, as he began his shift on Dec. 27 he noticed the stolen vehicle at the Judith Warren residence located on Old Alton Road in Thayer.

As officers arrived at the Warren residence, the stolen vehicle, driven by Jason Stover, was pulling out of the driveway. Bunting said he stopped the van and took Stover into custody.

Stover, 29, of Stamps, Ark., has been charged with a class C felony of receiving stolen property.

He posted a bond of $4,900 and is scheduled to be in court in Alton later this month.
