Charles Ray Owens, of Union, Ark., son of the late C.L. (Spikey) Owens and Ollie Jennings Owens, was born Jan. 21, 1949, in Union. He died April 12, 2008, at his home at the age of 59.

He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a fiber optic cable splicer and worked with a construction crew laying line for telephone companies. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church at Union.

Survivors include: his children, Whitney Gitzen of Arizona and Mark Gitzen of Missouri; two grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Laureta Freeman and husband, Bill of Twin Falls, Idaho, Hazel Powell of Yakima, Wash., Sonny Owens of Salem, Ed Owens and wife Janet of Salem and Jerry Owens and wife, Eileen of Napavine, Wash.

He was preceded in death by: two brothers, Larry and Wendell Owens and his father and mother.

Graveside services were held April 17 at the Union Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
