Herman Nelson Cates, 74, of Alton, was born Oct. 10, 1931, in Alton, the son of Corwin Cates and Lois Cates. He died July 17, 2006, at his home.
He graduated from Alton High School in 1949 and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Pickney on April 16, 1955. After retiring he loved to spend time fishing with family and friends. In 1961, he was converted and was baptized by his father-in-law, Rev. Richard Pickney in Buffalo, Mo.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce Cates; three children, Kathy Johnson and husband Craig of Alton, Tim Cates and wife Linda, and Bill Cates and wife Linda; five grandchildren, Brad Johnson and wife Angela, Allison Roberts and husband Bobby, Stephanie Cates, Britany Cates, Jared Cates; five great-grandchildren, Cassie, Corey and Carter Roberts, Ryan and Avery Johnson, all of West Plains; his mother, Lois Cates; a sister, Helen Holmes; a brother, Hosea and wife Nancy, all of Alton; and several special nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his father, Corwin Cates, an infant sister; his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Laura Pickney; and a brother-in-law, Bill Holmes.
Services were held July 19 in the Clary Chapel in Alton with Bro. Jeff Cates officiating. Interment followed in the Huddleston Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Clary Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Tim, Bill and Jared Cates, Craig and Brad Johnson and Bobby Roberts.
Honorary pallbearers were Dwight Holmes, Alan Wilson, Lonnie Hollis, Jim Henson, Brad Vest, Carl Watson and Gary Simpson.
