Hounds top dogs in regionals

Thursday, September 28, 2006

Things were doubly sunny on the links for the Salem Greyhound golf teams last week, as the girls' squad captured the regional crown by 51 strokes, while the boys needed a shootout to notch their regional tournament title.

The Lady Hounds punched their ticket to the 3A State Tournament in El Dorado by winning the regional crown Sept. 18 at Turkey Mountain Golf Course in Horseshoe Bend.

Salem's team total of 311 was 51 strokes better than second-place Cave City could manage.

Bergman and Green Forest tied for third, while Valley Springs came in fourth with a 374.

On the boys' side of things, it was much closer.

However, the Greyhounds did manage to take top honors in the regional tournament Sept. 18 at Big Sugar Country Club in Pea Ridge.

Locked with Shiloh Christian at 257 after regulation, the Hounds won a shootout with the Saints to grab first place and a trip to the 3A State Tournament.

Alex Smith paced Salem by carding an 84, while J.W. Blevins posted an 86 and Shane Smith an 87. Shane Smith also notched a hole-in-one on the 140-yard hole number 16.

Eureka Springs finished with a team score of 261, while the hosts from Pea Ridge logged a 262. Valley Springs shot 273, while Bergman rounded out the field with a 280.
