Monday, as American citizens reflected and turned to the nation's flag in honor of those who have died to preserve it, VFW members across the United States were especially moved.

Through honor and community service, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization strives to "honor the dead by helping the living." Salem VFW Post 9777 members are diligent in their efforts to do just this.

Joyce Crow with the Fulton County Office of Veteran Affairs said the local post works to be active in the community. "We donate to various charities and give scholarship money every year," she said. "And we always go to funerals that request a military salute."

"This is an important thing. We need members of the younger generation," Crow said. "The future needs to know the sacrifices that were made, but we're all older. What happens when we're gone?"

Those interested in joining Salem VFW Post 9777 can contact Vernon Crow at 895-2317.
