James Earl "Buddy" Bailey, 87, of Hardy, formerly of Steele, Mo., died Oct. 16, 2006, in his home.
He was born Aug. 14, 1919, near Jackson in Madison County, Tenn. He was the son of the late John Elisha and Emma Lee Hamlett Bailey.
He was married to Lee Ilace Funderburk on Nov. 22, 1946, in Blytheville, Ark.
He accepted the Lord and was baptized on March 17, 1947. He was a member of the Micola Baptist Church from that time until he moved to Mississippi in 1964. He served as a Sunday school teacher for many years in Missouri, Mississippi and Georgia.
He was a retired farmer, a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner and was a member of Spring River Baptist Church and honorary member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a "people person" famous for story telling and jokes.
Buddy served his country in the U.S. Army in World War II. He entered active duty Dec. 23, 1940, and was honorably discharged on Nov. 30, 1945 at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. He was a member of Company A, 140th Infantry Division, and was stationed in England, France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. He was awarded two bronze stars and was entitled to wear the American Theater Campaign ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon, American Defense Service ribbon, three overseas bars, and the Victory ribbon.
Survivors include Lee Ilace Bailey, his wife of 59 years of Hardy; Two sons, John S. "Steve" Bailey and his wife, Brenda of Donalsonville, Ga., Earl Douglas "Doug" Bailey and his wife, Geralyn, of Cordova, N.C.; one daughter, Barbara Ann Homod and husband, John Charland of Hardy; six grandchildren, Stephanie Bailey Trawick and husband, Todd, of Franklin, Wis., Earl Douglas Bailey Jr. and wife, Mary Catherine, of Elgin, Texas; Kelly Bailey and husband, Jason, of the Caribbean Islands; Wendy Ward Lute and her husband, David, of Ash Flat; Amy Ward Charbuski and husband, Steve, of Highland; and John Homod and wife, Erica, of Highland; 11 great-grandchildren, Robby and Katie Trawick, Cody Homod, Lauryn Lute, Savannah, Emily and Luke Charbauski, Sierra, Leah and Hunter Homod, and Ethan Homod.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Bailey Hampton, and a grandson, James D. "Jim" Homod.
The funeral services were held at Lighthouse Baptist Church in Ozark Acres on Oct. 19. Interment followed at the Baker Cemetery in Ozark Acres. Bro. Hank McElderry and Bro. O.C. Wright officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Heath Funeral Home of Hardy.
Pallbearers were Steve Bailey, Doug Bailey, John C. Homod, Doug Bailey Jr., John D. Homod, David Lute, Cody Homod and Robby Trawick.
Honorary pallbearers were Donward Wiles, Jim Hussung, Frank Avinelis, Lloyd Frances, Robert Honeycutt, Sam Bradley, Ernest Rains, Eric Sikes, Larry Swetnam, Tom Taylor, David Richardson and Joe Sharp.
Memorials may be made to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.
