Viola students earn Golden Apple Award

Thursday, December 6, 2007

The Viola School District is one of 10 schools across the state to be chosen for the 2007 Golden Apple Award sponsored by THV television station in Little Rock, the University of Central Arkansas and the Arkansas Department of Education. This is the fourth year for the awards.

Other school districts in the top ten are Greenwood, Searcy, Parkers Chapel, Valley View, Bentonville, Lakeside, Valley Springs, Mountain View and Norfork. Viola is the only school new to the Golden Apple award winners.

The top 10 districts are chosen based on the scores of students' Benchmark exams administered last spring.

The exact order that the schools rank in the state, including which school scored the best, will be announced during a live THV Golden Apple special on Dec. 11 at 6:30 p.m. It will be broadcast from the campuses of UCA and will be hosted by THV Sports Director Craig O'Neil and UCA President Lu Hardin.

Those in the area who do not have access to KTHV can log on to the station's Web site, www.todaysthv.com, to watch the live broadcast.

"We are extremely pleased to be named to this honor," Superintendent John May said. "It's because of the tradition of hard work by the faculty, administration, and most of all the students of this school district that we have been selected for this award."

The THV Golden Apple Awards program began in 2004 and is the brainchild of O'Neil. The award is designed to recognize public school districts in Arkansas that achieve academic excellence.

Although not on the list this year, the 2006 Golden Apple Award winners included the Salem School District, ranked at number six and the Melbourne School District, ranked at number nine.
