A Texas man has been charged with assault, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, after allegedly shooting his father, James Pickett.
Devon James Cole Pickett, 18, of Odessa, Texas, is in the Oregon County Jail with a bond set at $50,000.
Oregon County Deputy Randy Vater filed a report that stated on Nov. 22 while responding to a car accident and possible shooting on Oregon County Road 324, he met a vehicle coming from the direction he was headed.
Vater stopped the vehicle and spoke with the three people in the vehicle, Devon Pickett his sister Stephanie Pickett, and her boyfriend Joseph R. Long. Devon Pickett told Vater they had just come from the James Pickett home where he had just shot his dad.
Vater reported Stephanie said her mother and father were drinking and got into a fight. She said she and her brother tried unsuccessfully to separate them. She said then her and Long and Devon left the house followed by her mother and father.
The officer said Stephanie said Devon had a gun and that her father was using her mother as a human shield. She said she then heard a gunshot and her father yell.
Vater said Long also said the couple were fighting and that Devon grabbed a gun and shot James Pickett.
According to the report James Pickett was shot in the right arm with a .22 caliber bolt-action rifle. Deputy Vater reported that he smelled alcohol on Devon and he took him to the sheriff's office where he volunteered to take a breathalyzer test. The test showed the younger Pickett had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .123 percent.
