Area schools announce first day of classes

ALTON -- Classes at the Alton R-IV School District will begin Aug. 15. Classes at the elementary school will begin at 8:20 a.m. and dismiss at 3:05 p.m. Classes at the high school will begin at 8:25 a.m. and dismiss at 3:10 p.m.

Registration for students new to the district will be Aug. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the counseling offices. Parents should bring their child's immunization records, birth certificate, and social security number when enrolling the student.

High school students who preregistered last spring can pick up their schedules according to the following schedule: Aug. 6, 12th grade from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11th grade from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Aug. 7, 10th grade from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 9th grade from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; Aug. 8, 8th grade from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Alton Superintendent of Schools Sheila Wheeler said on Aug. 9 an orientation for seventh grade will be held at the high school at 6 p.m. She said seventh grade schedules will be given out at the orientation.

Lunch and breakfast will be available to kindergarten through 12th grade students at the following prices: elementary student lunch, $1.10, reduced price lunch, 40 cents, extra milk, 25 cents; elementary student breakfast, 75 cents, reduced price breakfast 30 cents. High school student lunch, $1.20, reduced price lunch 40 cents, extra milk, 25 cents; high school breakfast, 85 cents, reduced price breakfast, 30 cents. Wheeler said students who are unable to pay the full price of meals will be able to apply for free and reduced price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program.

Open house will be held Aug. 16 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the elementary and high school buildings. The superintendent said all parents and community patrons are invited.

New teachers for the 2007-08 school year are Marilyn Cockrum, third grade; Tasha Reeves, fifth grade; Tamera Brown, fourth grade; Heather Sample, fifth grade, Sherrie Kuster, resource room; Greg Britton, high school math; and Jason Qualls, high school physical education.

MYRTLE -- Couch School will open for the 2007-08 school year Aug. 13 at 8:06 a.m. with a full day of classes. Classes will dismiss at 2:45 p.m.

The following dates have been set for student registration:

July 31 -- 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., senior registration and schedules issued.

July 31 -- 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., junior registration and schedules issued.

Aug. 1 -- 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., sophomore registration and schedules issued.

Aug. 1 -- 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. freshman registration and schedules issued.

Aug. 2 -- 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., new students register in all grades.

Couch Superintendent of School Tom Bull said students in grades seven and eight will receive their schedules the first day of school.

He said students in grades seven through 12 are required to pay a $10 book deposit Aug. 13.

Bull said buses will run their regular routes with breakfast and lunch being served in the cafeteria. The lunch and breakfast prices are as follows:

Breakfast

Students K-6, 70 cents, lunch, $1.

Students 7-12, 70 cents, lunch, $1.10.

Reduced K-12, 30 cents, lunch, 40 cents.

Adults, $1.10, lunch, $1.60.

Teacher work days at Couch will be Aug. 9 and 10. Open House at the school will be Aug. 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Bull said the A+ sign-in will be Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. in the old gym.

The annual alumni meeting and dinner will be Sept. 1. Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7 p.m.

Bull said classes will be dismissed Sept. 3 for Labor Day.

School pictures at the school will be taken Sept. 5.

THAYER -- The Thayer R-II School District will open the 2007-08 school year Aug. 15, at 8 a.m. Class will be dismissed at 3 p.m.

Registration for students new to the district will be Aug. 6, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

High school students can pick up their class schedules Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Orientation for students entering 7th grade and their parents/guardians is scheduled for Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. in the high school gym.

Teacher orientation and workshops are Aug. 13 and 14.

Open house at the elementary school will be Aug. 14 from 6 to 7 p.m.
