Alvan "Mike" Holmes, age 86 of Viola, died at his daughter's home in Princeton, Minn., July 16, 2007. He was born March 5, 1921, in LeCenter, Minn. to Errol and Alice (Gambold) Holmes.

Mike enlisted into the United States Army on January 21, 1941. He served during WWII and was Honorably Discharged Aug. 23, 1945. He was proud of the time he spent in the service. He enjoyed sharing stories of his experiences. His interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis with military honors.

Mike married Lois Ruth Thomson in Des Moines, Iowa Dec. 22, 1948. They lived in Iowa until returning to Minnesota to live on the family farm in rural Sandstone. After a few years, the couple moved to St. Paul where they lived for 28 years, retiring to Arkansas. Throughout their marriage they was blessed with nine children.

Mike worked as a metal etcher at Buckbee-Mears from 1954-1986. He was a member of American Legion Post 52, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Mountain Home and the Military Honor Guard.

He enjoyed dancing, working on mechanical things and wood. He especially enjoyed building birdhouses and book cases. He had the gift of being able to view pieces of woodwork and be able to duplicate them. He was truly talented.

He is survived by: his wife, Lois; children, Alice (Lee) Meyer, Michael (Laurie) Holmes, Glen (Cheri) Holmes, David (Carolyn) Holmes, Susan (Jeff) Irons, Sharon (Christopher) Johnson and Tamara (Jerry S.) Thiel-France; 15 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; two great-step grandchildren; a brother, Francis "Frank" Holmes; two sisters, Iris Edwards and Alice (Tom) McClune; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by: his daughter, Sheila; a son, Loren; his parents, Errol and Alice; brothers, Loren "Pete" Holmes, Fremont "Sam" Holmes; and by his son-in-law, John Thiel.

Memorials preferred to Viola, Ark. Volunteer Fire Depart-ment or the American Legion Post 52 in Mountain Home.

Services were July 18 at Williams-Hanson-Kaun Funeral Home in Princeton, Minn. Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneap-olis, July 23, 2007. A memorial service will be held in Arkansas at a later date.
