Base pay for new teachers set at MS

Thursday, March 29, 2007

MAMMOTH SPRING -- The Mammoth Spring School Board met in regular session March 12.

Mammoth Spring Superintendent of Schools Ron Taylor presented the board members with a schedule for a school board members workshop that will be held at the school June 7.

Taylor told the board Scott Beardsley of Beardsley Finance from Little Rock will present the workshop. "This will give board members four of the six yearly workshop hours school board members are required to have in Arkansas," the superintendent said.

The school board voted to approve certified staff salary for the 2007-08 school years. They voted to raise the base pay of the certified staff members by one percent.

Starting next year a newly hired teacher at the school with a bachelor's degree will have a starting pay of $30,016. A teacher with a master's degree, with no experience, will start at a base pay of $34,518.

"Our beginning teachers salary ranks 127th in the state out of 245 school districts," Taylor said.

"In our school district we are striving to to hire and keep the most competent teachers we can and we believe a good base salary will help achieve that goal," he said.

The base pay for all classified or non-certified staff members including nurses, bus drivers, teachers aides and bookkeepers was also voted on and raised by one percent by the school board.

The superintendent presented a proposal to board members concerning 10 acres of land owned by Jerry Smith that adjoins school property that Smith is wanting to sell. The board members decided to table the land offer until another meeting date.

The school board voted to authorize the superintendent to look into getting bids to asphalt the remainder of the student parking lot at the school and to re-seal the existing parking lot in front of the school. The superintendent said this would be a summer project.

The school board voted to hire Case Wood Flooring of Mammoth Spring to re-coat 10,500 square feet of floors at the school, including the multi-purpose building floor, and gym floor. Taylor said this will also be a summer project.

Spring break at the school will be April 2-6. The April school board meeting will be April 16.

The board voted to re-hire all certified teachers at the high school and elementary school.

They voted to accept the resignation of long-time school librarian and English teacher Jo Kay Smith.

Smith has been employed at the Mammoth Spring School District 37 years. The board expressed their appreciation for her years of service at the school.
