Ralph G. "Sandy" Sanders, 81, longtime resident of Virginia Beach, Va., and a denizen of Pungo, died March 17, 2007, in a Norfolk, Va., hospital.

He was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Alton, Mo., the son of the late Nova Williams Sanders and Andrew Jacob Sanders. He was the widow of Lola Drummond Sanders.

He graduated from Alton High School in 1943, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was commissioned as a naval officer in 1959, and served with distinction until his retirement as a Lieutenant Commander in 1973. He was a veteran of W.W. II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy he devoted himself to volunteer work, including building and maintenance projects for Charity United Methodist Church, the Pungo Strawberry Festival and the Pungo Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by: a son, Louis Sanders and his wife Jackie of?Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Helen Milkovich of Granite City, Ill.; a brother, Otto Sanders of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service was held on March 21 at Charity United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach by the Reverends Deborah Fair and Tommy Markham. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Charity UMC?Building Fund, the National Parkinson Foundation, or the American Cancer Society. The funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Cox Funeral Home.
