Mobile food pantry to help needy

Friday, January 12, 2007

OREGON COUNTY -- Area residents who have difficulties making ends meet from one month to the next will now have some help with household and personal items.

The Mobile Food Pantry trailor will be in Oregon County every month in 2007, starting in Thayer Jan. 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. full of items to be given away to those in need.

Oregon County Health Department nurse Teri Wrenfrow said the mobile pantry is sponsored by The Ozark Food Harvest from Springfield. The mobile unit will be behind the old elementary school at 6th and Chestnut streets in Thayer and will be in town the same day the commodities are given away.

"Our commodity day has been changed to the second Thursday of each month because this is the day the mobile unit can come to Thayer," Wrenfrow said. She said the mobile unit will be in Thayer on odd months and will be in Alton at the Methodist Church on even months.

"There are no income guidelines to receive items from the Mobile Food Pantry," Wrenfrow said.

The Mobile Food Pantry is a new program, and Oregon County is only the second county in the state to be involved in the program. Neighboring Shannon County has received help from the Mobile Food Pantry already.

"Although this is a free service to residents, the Health Department has to pay $200 a month to get the mobile unit here. The program is sponsored by the Rotary Clubs across the state. The local Rotary Club, as well as other organizations and some churches, are helping pay for the unit to come to Oregon County," Wrenfrow said. She added that any individual, church or organization that would like to help can make a donation to the Oregon County Health Department at Thayer or Alton.

Wrenfrow said the reason the Mobile Food Pantry was coming to Oregon County was because there is a large number of low-income individuals and families in the county and not enough assistance for those in need.
