LeRoy "Hap" Davis, age 86, of Alton, was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Kansas City, Kan., and died Jan. 18, 2007, at his home.
While living in Northlake, Ill., Davis led two pledge drives which resulted in the erection of the St. John Viany Catholic Church and School. He was a member of the Holy Name Society and was an associate director of Pony and Little League baseball.
He retired from the Chicago Tribune newspaper after 37 years, with a 60-year membership in the International Typographical and Communi-cations Workers of American unions.
In 976 he and Minnie made their home in Alton. They were active members of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Thayer and both were successful in a number of Senior Olympic events.
Survivors include his children: Luis Davis and wife Carmen of Juncos, Puerto Rico, Thomas Davis and wife Laura of St. Paul, M inn., Karin Sack and husband Ronald of Neosho, Mo., Mariann Horack and husband Steven of Boling Brook, Ill., Janet Stephens and husband Jeffrey of Carrollton, Texas, Walter Davis and wife Christie of Salem, Wis., Williams Davis and wife Debora of Northlake, Ill., and Charlina Davis of Santa Barbara, Calif.; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy Davis Sr., and Elinore Williams-Davis; and his wife, Minnie Bettini-Davis.
The funeral services were held Jan. 26 at the Clary Funeral Home in Alton. Burial followed in the Many Springs Cemetery.
The arrangements were under the direction of the Clary Funeral Home of Alton.
