Something Special for someone special

Thursday, January 25, 2007

TASTE TEST: The Something Special Bakery in Thayer held a taste testing for new diabetic goodies at he bakery Jan. 12. Something Special owner Ann Beatty, right, said the new sweets are now available at the bakery.

THAYER -- A local bakery, Something Special, began offering the community something a little different earlier this month.

Bakery owners Ann and James Beatty had many customers come into their bakery, located at 115 Chestnut Street in Thayer, and ask about diabetic goodies.

"We opened last year and after several requests for diabetic sweets I started saying wait until after the first of the year. Ladies will be going on diets trying to lose some of that extra holiday weight and maybe we won't be so busy," Ann said.

The Beattys held true to their word and after research Ann came up with a Splenda cookbook with diabetic recipes.

"Splenda is like sugar but not sugar. It is made from sugar so it tastes like sugar. It does not affect a diabetic the way sugar does," Ann said.

They are currently offering cookies and muffins for diabetics but will try to make anything requested for diabetics. "They are more than welcome to come look at the Splenda cookbook and see if there is anything in it we could make for them," she said.

"I use the Splenda cookbook because it gives nutritional facts that diabetics need to know. I've learned they not only need sweets but also carbohydrates and oils," Ann said.

The bakery is open Tuesday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Diabetic and regular orders can be made by calling 264-7735.
