ALTON -- The Ozark Black Gold Walnut Festival will start Oct. 6 on the square at Alton.

The festival is sponsored by the Alton Chamber of Commerce.

Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost of the meal is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 10,

Entertainment will be provided by the Dale Wake Band and Country Connection. A concession stand will be open from 7 to 9 p.m.

A chamber official said anyone planning to attend the evening activities should bring a lawn chair.

Vendor booths will open at 8 a.m. the next day followed by opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. Entertainment will immediately follow with performances by the Alton High School Sound Waves, Danielle Earls and Mike Crawford.

The pumpkin carving contest will be from 8 to 11:30 a.m.

Haigwood Insurance will sponsor the chain saw contest. The railroad ties for the contest will be provided by Thompson Sawmill.

Amy Wright will perform at 11:15 a.m., and Rhonda Davis will perform at 11:40 a.m.

A hot dog eating contest is set for noon sponsored by the Alton Bank. At 12:30 p.m. contest winners will be announced.

The pumpkin carving contest is sponsored by Alton Florist; best decorated booth sponsored by Simpson's True Value and Alton Chamber of Commerce; most original walnut product sponsored by the Bank of Thayer, Alton branch; cooking contest sponsored by Shepherd's View.

At 12:45 p.m. winning entries in the cooking contest will auctioned by Gary Hensley, with the proceeds going to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The Mammoth Spring Square Dancing Club will perform at 1 and 2 p.m., and the walnut picking contest is set for 1:30 p.m.

The Alton Assembly of God Soldiers will perform at 2:30 p.m., Angie and Courtney Reeves will perform at 3 p.m., and Bobby and Allison Roberts will perform at 3:30 p.m.

Winners of the boy's and girl's bikes, sponsored by Guardian Preschool and the Christos House Resale Shop, will be announced at 4 p.m. The winner of the $200 Wal-Mart gift certificate offered by the chamber will be announced at that time.
