MSU-WP golf season tees off

Thursday, October 5, 2006

Members of the Missouri State University-West Plains club golf team competed in its first two tournaments during September and showed they have what it takes to play at the collegiate level.

At their first event, the Missouri Intercollegiate Tournament Sept. 3-5 at The Club at Porta Cima, a private golf course at Lake of the Ozarks, the team placed 14th out of 17 teams. Team member Ben Knight of West Plains finished 24th out of 150 golfers with rounds of 79-75-79.

"This was their first tournament as a new club, and they were extremely excited and enjoyed the event very much," volunteer coach Phil Wade said. "Ben had an excellent tournament. Overall, I was extremely proud of them and their efforts at their first collegiate event."

The second event was the Southwest Baptist University Invitational Sept. 17-19 at Bolivar.

The Missouri State-West Plains team finished 10th out of 13 teams, with Willow Springs' Tyler Newton leading the charge.

Newton turned in rounds of 76-76 and was the top finisher for the group.

"While I am pleased with our players' performance so far, there is still a lot of work to do for them to become better at competing in tournament play at this level," Wade said. "These young men have never competed on courses this difficult and against players this talented. But I know they are practicing hard and working to improve their skills with our technical adviser, Brenndan Cooper, so they can compete better at this level."

The team's next tournament will be Oct. 8-10 at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.

Wade said donations for support of the team are still being accepted.

To donate, call Wade at 417-274-6732 or Dr. Herb Lunday, dean of student services at Missouri State-West Plains and the team's staff adviser, at 417-255-7255.
