OREGON COUNTY -- A Back to School Fair will be held Aug. 2 for school children in Oregon County.
According to Paula Miller, Ozark Action Oregon County community service representative, the program is designed to help low income students in the county in kindergarten through the eighth grade with school supplies the students are required to provide themselves.
Ozark Action annually sponsors the fair and this year it will be held at the Alton Elementary School.
"As you may be aware, schools today do not furnish all of the supplies children need. Imagine the embarrassment of the children in circumstances where the parents can't afford the supplies they need," Miller said.
She said Ozark Action hopes to help these families bear the burden of the expense for the supplies to enhance the educational experience of the needy children. "The support of the community can make this effort a great success," Miller said.
She said some of the other services that will be offered the day of the fair include health checkups (hearing, vision, dental, weight and height), fingerpainting, library services, fire safety, conservation office information, electrical safety, handicapped services, nutrition, budgeting ideas, and Parents as Teachers information.
Miller said to keep from waiting in line, families are encouraged to pre-register before Aug. 1 by calling her office at 417-778-7490 at Alton or 417-264-2215 at Thayer.
"Businesses or individuals interested in donating to the Back to School Fair can send their donation to Ozark Action, P.O. Box 248, Alton, MO 65606 and indicate at the bottom of the check that it is for the Back to School Fair," Miller said. She added that all donations are tax deductible and all funds received in Oregon County will stay in the county.
