Ralph F. Cox, the son of Wilburn S. Cox and Ruby Stubblefield Cox, was born Feb. 4, 1925, at Myrtle, Mo. He died Aug. 19, 2006, in West Vue Nursing Center of West Plains, Mo.

The family moved to Alton when Ralph was 10 years old. In 1941 he graduated from Alton High School and went to work immediately for the Bank of Thayer, filing and posting checks.

In 1943 he entered the United States Army, serving three years in the quartermaster corps. He returned in 1946 to the Bank of Thayer and became a cashier. He joined First National Bank of West Plains, now Bank of America, in 1962 as a vice president. In 1977 he became president and chairman of the board of the First National Bank and worked there until retirement in 1995.

Cox spent all of his working life in the banking business. He was honored by the Missouri Banker's Association for 50 years of loyalty and service to the profession of banking in Missouri, the Fifty Year Club.

He was an avid golfer, and after his retirement he spent many of his afternoons playing golf with a group of longtime friends and buddies on the West Plains Country Club course where he was a member for 44 years. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Clifton Masonic Lodge #463 at Thayer.

Cox was married to Louella Simpson on Jan. 3, 1947, at Alton, Mo.

He is survived by his wife, Louella; one daughter, Mary Jo and her husband Tom Verrengia of Miami, Fla.; one brother, Johnny L. Cox and wife Barbara of Thayer; and many relatives and friends in Howell and Oregon County.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were held Aug. 22 at the Carter Funeral Home Chapel in West Plains. Burial was in Baily Cemetery in Oregon County. with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home.
