Voters will head to polls Nov. 7

Thursday, November 2, 2006

OREGON COUNTY -- Polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. for the Nov. 7 general election.

Oregon County Clerk Gary Hensley said this will be the second time the new electronic voting machines have been used in the county and he anticipates no problem with the machines.

"I would again like to remind voters that voting this time may take a little extra time because our ballots will be different than they have been in the past," he said.

For the first time in Missouri, voters will be required to vote an individual ballot, not a straight ticket. Hensley said he thinks this may take voters a little bit longer than voting the straight ticket ballot.

Hensley said he and deputy clerks in his office have observed absentee voters in his office and they have taken longer to cast their ballot than in years past.

"I would also like to remind voters the Voter Identification Bill is not in effect. Voters will still have to show some type of identification before they vote, but a photo ID will not be required. A driver's license, voter identification card or anything with a current address will be accepted," he said.

Several local races are on the ballot. Oregon County Presiding Commissioner Leo Warren, a Democrat, will face Republican Dan Fraley.

County Collector Jerry Richardson, a Democrat, is running against Republican Marvin Simpson.

Two names will appear on the ballot for state representative for District 153. Incumbent Republican Mike Dethrow is being challenged by Kenny Burke, a Democrat.

Eighth District Congressman Jo Ann Emerson, a Republican, will face two challengers, Libertarian Brandon McCullough and Democrat Veronica Hambacker.

A state race that has received national attention is the U.S. Senate seat in Missouri. Incumbent Jim Talent, a Republican, is being challenged by Democrat Clair McCaskill, Libertarian Frank Gilmour and Progressive Party candidate Lydia Lewis.
