As the school year winds down for area school children, many will be looking for activities to do this summer. The Grizzly basketball program at Missouri State University-West Plains has one fun option to consider -- Grizzly Basketball Camps.
The fun begins June 16-19 with the Elementary Basketball Skills Camp for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grades.
This camp, which will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. each day, will concentrate on the basic basketball fundamentals. Primary emphasis will be placed on passing, shooting, dribbling and footwork. Participants will compete in several contests, and awards will be given. Participants also will receive a free T-shirt. "Our goals for this camp are to have fun and improve as basketball players," said Grizzly basketball Head Coach Brian Ostermann.
The Grizzly "2 In 1" Specialty Basketball Camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 23-26 for boys and girls in grades five through 12.
This camp will focus on shooting fundamentals in the morning and competitions and games in the afternoon and evening.
All aspects of shooting will be taught, including footwork, balance, release of shot, hand placement on ball, follow-through, shots off the dribble, and shots off the pass. Several shooting competitions and contests will be part of the camp, Ostermann said.
The afternoon and evening sessions will give participants the opportunity to compete against area players in their age group in a variety of contests. "There will be no lectures, just four days of non-stop competitive play," Ostermann said. Prizes and/or awards will be given to winners in most competitions, he added. Lunch and dinner is included in the camp, and participants will receive a free T-shirt or Grizzly basketball.
Cost of the Elementary Basketball Skills Camp is $65; however, a $15 discount will be given to those who pay their registration fee in full by June 1. Cost of the Grizzly "2 In 1" Specialty Basketball Camp is $195 for commuters and $245 for those who wish to stay in a room at the Grizzly House residence hall on the Missouri State-West Plains campus. A $15 discount will be given to those who pay the fee in full by June 1.
