Elijah (Lige) Desmon Pierce of Salem, son of the late Alvie Pierce and Lennie Durham Pierce, was born July 2, 1925, in Ott, Ark. He died Aug. 24, 2006, at Fulton County Hospital in Salem at the age of 81.
He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was one of the Tennessee Volunteers, 30th Division, who fought the Battle of The Bulge.
He was united in marriage to Lillie Head on July 28, 1951, in Wasco, Calif. To this union two children were born.
He was self employed for many years as a heavy equipment operator. He was also a plumber and a farmer.
He was a member of the Salem First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lillie of the family home; his daughter, Meleesa Autry and husband, Larry of Patuxent River, Md., his son, Desmon Pierce Jr., of San Jose, Calif.; his grandson, Pierce Autry; a granddaughter, Blake Autry; his sister, Faye Moss of Salem; and a host of other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents;, two sisters, Azalee and Anna Lee; and three brothers, Ralph, Alford and Joe.
The funeral services were held on Aug. 26 at the Salem First Baptist Church in Salem with burial following in the Oak Grove Cemetery at Mountain Home.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem.
