THAYER -- A new health center opened in Thayer April 3.
The Oregon County Community Health Center is sharing space with the Oregon County Health Department at Second and Market Streets. The building the offices are located in belongs to the Oregon County Library.
Oregon County Health Department Administrator Shiela Russell said the health center project has been in the works at least four years. As health department administrator, Russell served on the board trying to get the grant for the health center
"The health center project is funded through a federal health center grant. This is the same grant that funded the same type of center in West Plains that opened two years ago," Russell said. She said the West Plains office has been a huge success and the center there has already outgrown its building and is starting to build a larger one.
Karen Hendrix will be the medical receptionist. The office will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Russell said Family Nurse Practitioner Celeste Williams has returned to the area and will see patients Monday, Thursday and Friday. She said appointments also can be made on Tuesday and Thursday when Williams is not in the office.
Counselor Billie Hutchings will also be available at the clinic to see patients.
"None of the services or time schedules offered by the health department will change," Russell said.
She said some of the services the health center will offer include acute and chronic care for the family, women's health/GYN, laboratory services and well child exams.
Russell said Medicaid, Medicare and most types of insurance will be accepted. A sliding fee scale is available for those who qualify.
"One of the great things about the health center is it is not just for Oregon County or Missouri residents. People who live in Arkansas will also be accepted as patients at the clinic," Russell said.
