Forklift accident injures man

Thursday, August 10, 2006

An Aug. 2 accident at an Agnos truss plant has left a Williford man hospitalized for an undetermined amount of time.

Charles Cross, 59, suffered four broken ribs and a broken pelvis after the forks of a Clark IT40 forklift fell on him.

"He was putting in the cylinders that push the forks up and down," Plant Manager Blake Medlock said. "Before he got in the mast (the cylinders) it shifted, causing the chains holding it up to break and the forks fell on him."

Medlock said the forks are made of solid metal and probably weigh approximately 800 pounds. Cross is the forklift operator and mechanic at the plant in Agnos which employs 14 people full time.

Emergency workers evacuated Cross by air to St. John's Medical Center in Springfield, Mo. He remains hospitalized in fair condition, Medlock said.

Cross has been an employee of Medlock Truss since 1998. Medlock said he expects Cross to be back at work after he is fully recovered.

"He's an excellent employee," Medlock said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and we hope he has a speedy recovery."
