James David Lemons, 65, of Topeka, Kan., son of Freida Louise (Baker) Lemons and the late Elvin Preston Lemons, was born on March 8, 1943, in Plato, Mo. He departed this life on June 2, 2008, at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kan.
He was united in marriage to LaVonna Sue Gilbert on June 24, 1965, at Miami, Okla. He graduated from Houston High School in 1961. Jim worked at Goodyear Tire and Rubber for over 33 years and attended business college. He spent his retirement enjoying his yard in between frequent hospital visits and supporting his granddaughter Lexi in Breathe: The Lexi Lemons project designed to educate youth about the dangers of smoking. Jim was baptized in the church of Christ but later attended the Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: his loving wife LaVonna S. Gilbert-Lemons of Topeka, Kan.; two daughters, Leia Lemons-McGhee and husband Larry of Knoxville, Tenn., and Lora Lemons of Topeka, Kan.; mother, Freida Lemons of Fulton, Mo.; a granddaughter, Lexi Lemons of Topeka, Kan., and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Graveside services were held Friday, June 6 at the Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Ark., with Bro. Bobby Coleman officiating. Burial was in the Oxford Cemetery with the arrangements under the direction of the Barker Funeral Home of Salem.
Pallbearers were Charles Everett, Terry Gilbert, Brandon Gilbert and Cameron Gilbert.
