JThe Salem Chamber of Commerce Fireworks In The Park celebration will be held July 4 at the Salem City Park and this year will be the biggest fireworks display yet, Salem Chamber of Commerce president Greg Crews said.
"The events will be held at the city park. We will start the day about 10 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., people will start filtering in before noon. I recommend people get their around 10:30 a.m. or so. Of course there is never a bad time to come even if you have to wait to just before dark to show up," Crews said.
With the fireworks starting at nightfall, the day will be packed with fun and food.
"This has started out as a fairly small event and has grown, and continues to grow. It will be a picnic type environment with hot dogs, watermelon, popsicles, sodas, water, potato chips, all donated from area businesses and free of charge," Crews said.
"Dairy Queen will donate the hotdogs, Bank of Salem donates watermelons, FNBC donates popsicles, NAEC in the past has donated water and just about anything else we have ever needed out there. Town and Country has donated sodas, water an d various things for us. They have all been very, very generous to us. All these items are free to the public," Crews said.
"The show should last a couple of hours or so. I have been told it is going to be a bigger show than it was last year. They put a few new items into it every year for us," he said.
The Salem Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual event and according to crews it is a great way to promote Salem and draw attention to local businesses.
"It is a Salem Chamber of Commerce sponsored event. We accept donations from individuals who are out there as well as several businesses that donate to us to help cover the cost of the event. We really appreciate everyone who donates," Crews said.
The mission of the Chamber of Commerce is to promote business and business growth in Salem and the Salem area.
"Anytime we can hold an event of this magnitude it draws a lot of people into town. People get to see Salem; they get acquainted with it and come here, spend a little money. It is always good to have your own money spent in town, but when you draw in tourism dollars that is just free money to the businesses," Crews said.
"It is just a really good way to let people come in and I have been at several fireworks shows in various communities in the past and this show is second to none. It really does draw in a big crowd. It is a big savings on gas, too," Crews said.
