William "Bill" Henry Townsend, Jr., 84, of Richmond, Ind., died June 9, 2008, at Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond, Ind. He was born Jan. 13, 1924, in Grenada, Miss., to William Henry and Selma Brooks Townsend.
He served with the Navy during World War II, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross among other honors for his service aboard the carrier Randolph in the Pacific Theatre.
He spent his working life as an engineer, primarily in quality control and was deeply involved in experiments which went to the Moon with the Apollo Project.
He is survived by: his daughter, Pamela Townsend Wickert of Raleigh, NC; his son, William L. Townsend and daughter-in-law Vickie Townsend of Richmond, Ind.; his granddaughter, Calista Grace Wickert also of Raleigh; his sister, Virginia Hendricks of Thayer, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Ruby Gene (Mize) Townsend, who died Feb. 20, 2007, in Lebanon, Ohio.
