Compassionate response

Thursday, June 19, 2008

A 15-year-old Melbourne boy called the Izard County Sheriff's Department June 10 with a problem. Jonathan Roberts seemed extremely upset to dispatch personnel and said that something was wrong with his dog. Deputy Matt Chuckwell responded to the residence only to find Jonathan's dog dead. Churchwell went to the sheriff's department to get a shovel and returned to Jonathan's home to help him bury his dog.

Churchwell said that he remembered losing his dog when he was a young boy and wanted to further help him. Churchwell began calling everyone he knew who might have a dog to give to Jonathan. Dennis Williams, Izard County Emergency Coordinator advised Churchwell the next day that he had found a replacement. Heather Gerner of Melbourne gave a one-year-old Jack Russell Terrier to the sheriff's department. That day Churchwell, Williams and Chief Deputy Earnie Blackley returned to Jonathan's home with the dog and a bag of dog food. Churchwell, Gerner, Blackley and Williams represent a lot of caring people in Izard County.
