July 4th ... Oregon County is the place to be

AREA -- July 3 and July 4 firework activities will be held at Alton and Thayer.

The Alton Lion's Club will host fireworks activities in the city of Alton July 3.

According to Lion's Club member Barbara Rickert, activities will get underway at 7 p.m. at Piney Creek Park located on Highway 160 East.

Pam and Kelly Johnson will start the evening with Gospel music.

There will be a concession stand and political candidates will be allowed to speak.

The Thayer Chamber of Commerce will sponsor this year's July 4th Fireworks Show at the Thayer High School Football Field.

Activities will actually kick-off that morning with a car and truck show at 9 a.m. in downtown Thayer.

According to chamber spokesperson Ron Cornelius, trophies will be awarded for the best of show, five first place trophies, five second place trophies, a people's choice award and a trophy for the greatest distance traveled.

Dash plaques will be presented to the first 25 entries and judging will be based on a 100 point system.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., judging will be at 1 p.m. and trophies will be awarded at 1:30 p.m. There will be an entry fee of $20 for each car and truck entered.

Breakfast and lunch will be available. No dogs or bicycles will be allowed at the show.

According to chamber secretary Faith Holt, the fireworks show will start at dark. "Premier Pyrotechnics will be providing the fireworks this year," she said.

She said activities will start at 5 p.m. Booth space will be available for non-profit organizations for $25 and all other booth spaces will be $35. Anyone interested in having a booth can call Mike Crase at 417-264-7211.

Holt said there will be free watermelon, compliments of Wallace and Owens, and Mustang Amusements will have rides and games and a rock climbing wall.

Entertainment will be presented by The Last Ride Band and the recent winners of the Thayer Chamber Talent Show, The Overbearing Band will also perform that evening.

The K-Kountry 95 Seedo watercraft give-away from Hirsh Feed and Farm Supply will also be that evening.
