On July 3, the Spring River senior softballers played Jonesboro in a close, low-scoring game.
The score was only 2-1 going into the fourth inning.
On offense, Charlie "The Tuna" hit a triple, while "Wormy" also smacked a three-bagger.
Hillary Mangrum smashed a double (his grin was worth at least two Cardinal tickets).
Rick Comer collected four hits in the contest.
On defense, Bill Stuart snagged a couple of line shots, Gary Bacon dug out a few throws out of the dirt at first and "Scoop" LaFaye played his usual good defense at short.
The game was tied at the end of nine innings and headed to extra frames.
In the 10th inning, Spring River scored four runs to win 14-10.
In the second game, Trumann got off to a 2-0 lead.
But that lead did not last as the Spring River bats came alive.
Dan Hedrington and Joe Bonds' jackrabbit-speed-triple, along with Troy Clementi's double gave Spring River a lead.
It was a lead the team did not give up.
On defense, Stuart had a great catch on third, Dennis Brake (the great one) had an over-the-shoulder catch and also threw out a runner from short-right field.
The team played good defense to stop Trumann's rallies and Spring River won 18-13. Herb Hess pitched both games.
