John "Bertis" "Cat Eye" Nix, 88, of Mulvane, Kan., a retired Mulvane teacher and coach died, July 12, 2008.
He was born on Sept. 22, 1919, in Ash Flat, Ark., the son of the late Melvin and Myrtle Nix.
He grew up in Ash Flat and was an athlete. At age 17 he went to St. Louis, Mo., to try out for the NY Yankees. As a high school senior he was on the state championship basketball team.
John attended Arkansas College in Batesville and graduated from Arkansas State in Jonesboro.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, he went on to coach and teach in several different towns in Arkansas.
In 1949, he married Mary Walter of Judsonia. He worked for Boeing at Beechcraft in Kansas but in 1961 returned to teaching. John taught at Mulvane Junior High School until his retirement.
He is survived by: his wife, Mary; children, Cathy and Mitchell Butler of Wichita, Kan., Melinda McGregor of Wichita; grandchildren, Dallas McGregor and Sean McGregor of Wichita; cousin "Sis" Dora Lee Wells of Ash Flat.
Funeral services were held on July 17 at First Baptist Church in Mulvane, Kan.

Baker Funeral Home, in Valley Center, Kan., was in charge of arrangements.
