AREA -- Schools across the area will start next month.
The following is information provided by Alton, Thayer, Mammoth Spring and Couch school districts.
Alton -- Classes at the Alton R-IV School District will begin Aug. 13. Classes will start at 8:20 a.m. and dismiss at 3:05 p.m. Classes at the high school will begin at 8:25 a.m. and dismiss at 3:10 p.m.
Registration for students new to the district will be July 31, Aug. 1 and Aug. 4, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., in the counseling office. When enrolling students, parents should bring their child's immunization records, birth certificate and Social Security number, along with the previous school's name, address and phone number.
High school students who pre-registered last spring can pick up their schedules on the following dates: Aug. 5, 12th grade, 9 a.m. to noon, and 11th grade, 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.; Aug. 6, 10th grade, 9 a.m. to noon, and ninth grade, 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.; Aug 7, eighth grade, 9 a.m. to noon.
According to School Superintendent Sheila Wheeler, on Aug. 7, an orientation for seventh graders and their parents will be held in the high school gym at 6 p.m. At this time, seventh grade students will pick up their schedules and meet with their junior high teachers. Lunch and breakfast will be available to all kindergarten through 12th grade students at the following prices: elementary school lunch $1.10, reduced price lunch 40 cents, extra milk, 30 cents; elementary student breakfast 75 cents, reduced breakfast 30 cents. High school student lunch $1.20, reduced lunch 40 cents, extra milk 30 cents; high school student breakfast 85 cents, reduced breakfast 30 cents. Students who are unable to pay the full price of meals will be able to apply for free and reduced priced meals through the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Students will need to pay for their meals in advance. Charges for meals will not be allowed to exceed $20.
Open house will be held Aug. 14 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the elementary and high school buildings. All parents and community patrons are invited.
New faculty members for the 2008-2009 school year are: Tina Craig, fifth grade; Desley Cunningham, sixth grade; Laurel Johnson, high school choir and Lindsley Meyer high school physical education/alternative school. New administrators are: Eric Allen, high school principal; Shane Denson, elementary principal, and Blake Reese, assistant principal.
Thayer -- The Thayer R-II School District will begin the 2008-2009 school year Aug. 14 at 8 a.m. Classes will be dismissed at 3 p.m.
Registration for new students to the district will be Aug. 4 and Aug. 5 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
High School students can pick up their schedules Aug. 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Orientation for students entering the seventh grade and their parents/guardians is scheduled for Aug. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school gym.
The days for teacher orientation and teacher workshops are Aug. 11, 12 and 13.
Open house at the elementary school will be Aug. 13 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Mammoth Spring -- The Mammoth Spring School District will start classes Aug. 18.
High school Principal Brian Davis said seventh grade orientation will be Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Couch -- Classes will start in the Couch School District Aug. 13.
According to school officials, registration for seniors and senior schedules will be issued July 30, from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Junior class registration will also be held July 30 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
July 31, sophomores can register and receive their schedules from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Freshman registration and the issuing of schedules will also be July 31 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
New student registration will be Aug. 1 for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Students in grades seven and eight will receive schedules the first day of school.
A $10 refundable book deposit will be collected on the first day of school.
