Hazel Sewell Brooks

Hazel Sewell Brooks, a long-time Cherokee Village, Ark., resident, died July 18, 2008, at the Fulton County Hospital. She was born in Cleveland, Okla., Oct. 15, 1913.

She graduated from high school in Cushing, Okla., and attended Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater. She married William W. (Bill) Brooks on July 3, 1938, and this year the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at Eaglecrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where they have been residents for the past three years. After World War II, Hazel and Bill settled in Champaign, Ill., and were employed by the University of Illinois, until their retirement to Cherokee Village in 1975. The Brooks taught square and round dancing in Illinois, inaugurated a popular, annual dance weekend at the University of Illinois in 1969 and participated in dance events nationwide. After their move to Cherokee Village, Hazel and Bill were active in the Cherokee Squares Dance Club, continuing to teach square and round dancing.

She is survived by: her husband, Bill; cousins, Darrel Sewell, Meredeth Wade, Judith Seibert and Dana Moore; a niece; two nephews; her goddaughter, Patricia Stoffel; and her family and many friends.

At Mr. and Mrs. Brooks' request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Gifts in Hazel's memory can be made to the Cherokee Village United Methodist Church.
