Late rally drops Spring River

Thursday, August 7, 2008

On July 24, the Spring River senior softballers went to Jonesboro and played the Gene Mitchell Gang. This was another close game with Spring River scoring first. On offense, Pat LaFaye, "Tuna" Morgan and "Wormy" banged out triples. Joe Bonds used his burning speed for an inside-the-park homer. On defense, LaFaye made some good infield plays, as did Don Hendrington. The outfielders had some good catches. Spring River went into the seventh inning with a four-run lead, but Jonesboro scored five runs in the bottom half to win 14-13.

In the second game with Trumann, it was once again close as usual. Trumann has heavy hitters throughout its lineup. However, Hillary "Scrappy" Mangrum got the offense rolling by smashing a double and a single. This inspired Tony Clementi and "Wormy" to hit triples and gave Bonds extra speed to hit another inside-the-park home run. On defense, Spring River had some breakdowns but plays by Hendrington, Herb Hess, LaFaye and Bill Stuart stopped Trumann from getting away with big innings. Charlie Morgan continued his hitting rampage. Spring River wins this one 15-10.

Herb Hess pitched both games.
