Benton angler claims Big Bass Bonanza's top prize

Thursday, August 7, 2008

A Benton fisherman took top honors in this year's Arkansas Big Bass Bonanza.

Duke Gunnell pulled in an 8.14-pound bass to take home the contest's $100,000 prize.

Gunnell, 43, used a white plastic frog to attract the large bass to his hook as he fished the morning of Aug. 3 among some lily pads in Post Lake near Dumas.

Gunnell said the fish fought him as he reeled.

He plans to split his prize money with his fishing partner, Hugh Burnett of Little Rock. Tournament organizers said 2,175 anglers took part in the three-day tournament.

Winners of the $2,200 biggest catch award in the other pools were:

* Pool 1 (Fort Smith) -- John Higman, Evansville, 7.81 pounds.

* Pool 2 (Dardanelle) -- Larry Gentry, Clarksville, 6.72 pounds.

* Pool 3 (North Little Rock) -- Randy McPherson, Mayflower, 5.42 pounds.

* Pool 4 (Pine Bluff) -- Charles Puckett, Rison, 6.58 pounds.

The Willow Leaf Award, presented each year along with $1,000 to a parent-child or grandparent-grandchild duo catching the largest bass, went to Higman and his father.
