Salem will receive a $10,000 grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the purchase of a new law enforcement vehicle.
USDA Rural Development grants offer assistance to rural communities, such as Salem.
Salem Police Chief Albert Roork said the police department will purchase a new Dodge Durango to replace Patrolman Mark Long's car.
Roork said the police department can't purchase the vehicle until a state bid comes through. He said if a local dealer can meet the bid the police department will buy the new vehicle.
U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Rep. Marion Berry announced the grant to Salem Aug. 19.
"Our law enforcement must have up-to-date tools and equipment to do their jobs well," said Berry. "I'm proud of the officials of the city of Salem for working to secure this funding, which will greatly benefit the local community."
