Signatures certified for wet/dry petitions

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Will Sharp County become a wet county after 62 years? This year that decision is up to the voters of Sharp County. The signature petitions were certified Aug. 27 and will be placed on the ballot for the Nov. 4 election.

Sharp County was voted dry in 1946 and while many would like to keep it that way, according to the county clerks office the only way the issue can be taken off the ballot is if someone files against it. Anyone who chooses to formally oppose the ballot, has 10 days from the time it is certified to do so. If there is a formal filing the only person who has the authority to take it off of the ballot is the judge.

While the debate of whether Sharp County and many surrounding counties should be wet has gone on for several years. Sharp County is not just debating anymore they are voting. There are several different views on the issue but only the votes will tell this time.
