Feeding families through ministry

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Everything is expensive these days with the ever soaring price of gas and oil. Even those who have jobs are having to tighten their budgets, but they and their children shouldn't have to starve.

Angel Food Ministry was founded in 1994 by Joe and Linda Wingo, of Monroe, Ga. The city was facing a factory shut down and many of the Wingos' neighbors were jobless. According to www.angel foodministries.com, the couple didn't want to see their neighbors and friends go hungry so they bought food and sold it at a reduced price from their back porch. They were able to feed 34 families that day. Now the Angel Food Ministry has grown to where it can feed up to 500,000 families a month in 35 states. The ministry can sell discounted food to anyone who needs it. There are no forms to fill out or financial qualifications.

Salem happens to have a menu ordering site for the ministry. Those who would like to place an order for their food boxes can stop by Baker's Pharmacy or the Immanuel Baptist Church or call 895-2993.

Senior citizen food boxes are $25, which includes 10 meals. Regular boxes are $30, which has enough food to feed a family of four for a week. That's an $80 value of groceries for $50 cheaper than it would be at the store.

"The quality of the food is excellent," Bobetta Baker of Baker's Pharmacy said. The Angel Food Ministry orders food from places like Tyson Chicken and Allen's canned food.

"Currently, we're serving about 30 families or more per month," Baker said. "Many are senior citizens."

According to Baker, the program also accepts food stamps.

"Many describe Angel Food Ministries as not being a hand-out but a hand-up project," Baker said.

Baker said her church supplies food boxes to Safe Passage, which is a women's shelter, and other ministries in the area contribute food boxes to those in need.

The joy of giving is apparently addictive. "Lots of people place an order to buy a box and give to someone else," Baker said.

The distribution date for food boxes is Sept. 27. For future ordering deadlines and distribution dates check out the Angel Food Ministry's Web site at www.angelfoodmin-istries.com.
