Subpoenas issued with gas spikes

Thursday, September 25, 2008

Over 30 subpoenas have been issued to gas retailers across the state regarding their increase in gas prices. The businesses subpoenaed have 20 days to respond.

"We've received over 1,450 phone calls and 2,400 text messages and e-mails," (since Sept. 12) said Gabe Holmstrom, Attorney General Dustin McDaniel's spokesman.

The investigations of price gouging are still in the preliminary stage. It has not yet been proven that any of the recipients of the subpoenas engaged in illegal activity. McDaniel said he believes that the information will speak for itself.

"In the event I find sufficient evidence of illegal price gouging, I will be making demand upon those entities to make restitution and pay penalties for the violation," McDaniel said. "If they refuse, they will be sued."

The attorney general's office is still encouraging citizens to use their cell phone cameras and document evidence of price gouging. The pictures and statements can be e-mailed to gas@arkansasag.gov or text messaged to 501-539-0969. The number to contact the office is 800-482-8982.
