A strong attack at the net led the Missouri State University-West Plains Lady Grizzly volleyball team to its 12th win of the season Sept. 15.
The Lady Grizzlies (12-8) pummelled Region 16 rival State Fair Community College of Sedalia, Mo., 25-12, 25-10, 25-13 at the West Plains Civic Center arena.
"They played well last night," Lady Grizzly Head Coach Trish Kissiar-Knight said. "It was a good win. Our hitting percentages were high. Anytime you have a team hitting .463 percent, you're doing well."
Freshman middle attacker Nile Whaley-Garrison led that attack, recording 11 kills on 19 attempts with two errors for a hitting percentage of .474. She also led in blocks with nine, three of which were solos, and she had the most points earned with 21.
"Nile really did well," Knight said. "She was all over it."
Freshman attacker Danielle Parker had the best hitting percentage for the night with .600, recording four kills on five attempts with only one error.
Freshman setter Patricia Figueiredo led the team in assists with 23, and freshman attacker Katja Stepanova led the Lady Grizzlies defensively with nine digs and a pass rating of 2.6.
"Our passing is still not close to where it needs to be," Knight said, "Defense and passing wins games."
After a tough weekend hosting the Ozarks Medical Center/Air Evac Lifeteam Tournament of Champions, the Lady Grizzlies may have turned a corner, Knight said. "I had the kids watch game film after last weekend's tournament, and I think that helped them," she explained. "I gave them a test to determine their knowledge of the game and found they weren't understanding what we're trying to do, but I think now they're understanding better. The speed of the game is a lot different from what they're used to, and they need to speed some things up."
Knight will find out if her players learned their lesson well when the team participated in the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Invitational Tournament this past weekend Fort Smith, Ark. The Lady Grizzlies fell to the Lady Lions this past Saturday in the Tournament of Champions at the West Plains Civic Center and will be looking to avenge that loss.
