THAYER -- The American Legion, Charles Burkett Post 344 is coming right along with their Veteran's Memorial project.

According to Legion Post Adjutant, Doyle Fink, through donations, they have raised nearly $3,000. He estimates the total cost of the project at around $4,000.

"The Veteran's Memorial will be a tribute to the men and women who have served our nation through their military service," Fink said.

The American Legion is a not-for-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. Donations may be sent to the American Legion, in care of Doyle Fink, adjutant, at Route 3, Box 3369, Thayer, MO 65791.

The memorial is planned to be placed across from Augusta Park in Thayer.

"Brenda Robinson from Robinson Memorials has made the memorial and did a wonderful job. It is stone, grey granite and will be incased in grey brick. James Martin will be doing the brick work. It will be similar to the memorials at the Thayer Cemetery and the Thayer Fire Department," Fink said.

The memorial is two feet wide and five feet long.

"We also plan to have three flag poles near the memorial that will fly the American Flag, the Missouri State Flag and a POW Flag," he said.

"This is something our post thinks Thayer has needed for a long time. In times of war and times of peace, throughout the history of our nation, and in every branch of service, our friends, neighbors and our loved ones have answered the call. We honor those heroes," he said.

Although an actual date has not been set, Fink said he is hoping to have the project done by November.
