Tax levy to be placed on ballot

Friday, October 3, 2008

OREGON COUNTY -- The Oregon County Ambulance District has placed a sales tax levy on the Nov. 4 General Election ballot.

They are proposing a sales tax levy of one-half of 1 percent.

This tax levy will lower property taxes in the county. It will also shift a substantial part of the tax from property owners to non-property owners, visitors and tourists.

There will be a guaranteed 50 percent reduction to the ambulance property tax. Ambulance officials said there is a real possibility of a complete 100 percent reduction once the sales tax has been in place for one full year.

Funding for the ambulance service in the county comes from the current property tax levy. Ambulance officials say these funds are not adequate to meet the fiscal needs of the district.

Ambulance board officials say they have made all the cutbacks they can and without more funds the county may lose one of its ambulances that currently provides the citizens of the county with needed services.

For more information call Alton City Hall at 417-778-6321 for the phone number of any of the ambulance board members.
