Vesta Marie Mills, daughter of the late Emery Allison and Martha Howell Mitchell, was born Dec. 19, 1910, at Thayer, Mo., and died Oct. 3, 2008, at West Vue Nursing Center in West Plains, Mo., at the age of 97. She was united in marriage Sept. 21, 1927, at Salem, Ark., to Hade Mills, who preceded her in death June 27, 1986.
Vesta was a cook for Thayer Schools for many years and retired as cook for Chastains Nursing Center at Thayer.
She was the last member of the Mitchell family.
Her great-grandfather, Jas-per Howell, was the first representative from Howell and Oregon County to be elected to the State Legislature. Howell County, Mo., was named in his honor.
She survived by: one son, Leroy Mills and his wife, Loretta of Thayer, Mo.; a grandson Bryan Mills and his wife, Holly of Harrison, Ark.; one great-grandson; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; one sister, Hettie Dunsmore; three brothers; Austin Mitchell Howard Mitchell and Earnest Allison Mitchell; one half-brother, Jessie Ray Mitchell; and one half-sister, Jessie Fay Mitchell Harkey, also preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held Oct. 6 in the Carter Funeral Home chapel in Thayer. Burial followed in the Thayer Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Thayer.
