A championship in boys' doubles and girls' singles highlighted the Highland Rebels' appearance at the 3-4A District Tennis Tournament Oct. 13 at Allen Park in Jonesboro.
The Rebels' duo of Garrett Johnson/Bryce Johnson took top honors in the boys' doubles, while Alison Price earned the girls' singles championship in the tournament.
Johnson/Johnson, along with Price and the Lady Rebs' girls' doubles team of Courtney Sharp/Ginny Long all earned invites to the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament Oct. 20 in Arkadelphia.
As a team, Highland finished third (six points) in boys' team play, while the Lady Rebs (eight points) came in as runners-up on the girls' side. Valley View and Westside tied for first place in the boys division, with Westside finishing on top of the girls' division.
In the finals of boys' doubles competition, Johnson/Johnson knocked off Dustin Jones/Aaron Thomas of Valley View 6-2, 6-1 for the title.
In the semis, Johnson/Johnson beat Valley View's Hunter Clark/Nolan Johnson 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the finals.
In the quarterfinals, Highland's Johnson/Johnson blew past Austin Hogan/Matt Baltz from Pocahontas 6-1, 6-0.
Johnson/Johnson earned All-District honors for their efforts.
In girls' singles, Price pushed past Pocahontas' Abby Difani 6-0, 6-3 to earn the tournament hardware.
In the semis, Price topped Valley View's Veronica Hawes 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the finals.
In the quarterfinals, Price beat Valley View's Kristin Haynes 6-1, 6-0. Also in the quarters, Highland's Kore Calwell fell to Pocahontas' Lauren McQuay 7-6, 6-2.
Price was named to the All-District team.
In girls' doubles, Highland's duo of Julia Eldridge/Kristina Langston beat Trumann's Morgan McKenzie/Baiyle Ballard, while the Lady Rebel pair of Courtney Sharp/Ginny Long knocked off Valley View's Gabriella Gorton/Jessica Steele.
Highland's title chances in the girls' doubles ended in the semis, with both pairs knocked out by Westside.
The Lady Warriors' Taylor Britton/Jadyn West beat Eldridge/Langston 6-1, 6-0, while Westside's Molly Arnold/Kelsy Dement beat Sharp/Long 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Britton/West beat Arnold/Dement 6-0, 6-3 in the finals.
Sharp/Long beat their teammates from Highland, Eldridge/Langston 8-3 for third place. Sharp/Long and Eldridge/Langston all made the All-District Doubles team.
