Using a big 16-4 push in the fourth period, the Izard County Lady Cougars opened the 2008 season with a 51-39 win over Flippin Oct. 21 in the Twin Rivers Classic at Norfork's Panther Pavilion.
The game was locked at 35-all after three before Izard County made its move to knock off the Lady Bobcats.
Rachel Harmon paced Izard County with a game-high 24 points. Sarah Taylor followed with 15 and Trisha Arnold posted eight.
Kaylee Cooper and Emily Crider tallied two points apiece for the Lady Cougars.
The Cougars, too, used a late rally against Flippin, but in boys' action, Izard County came up a bit short, falling 51-43 to the Bobcats.
Izard County got off to a slow start in the game and was in a 20-8 hole after one.
But although Flippin led by as many as 18 points in the final frame, the Cougars kept fighting and outscored the Bobcats 17-10 in the final frame.
Turns out this just wasn't enough, as Flippin held on to win by eight points.
Ethan Porter led Izard County with 18 points in the game. Gerrick Smith added seven, while Gage Wolford and Ryan Walker posted six points each. David Peck finished with four and Caleb Cowan tossed in two points for the Cougars.
