Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe announced Oct. 23 that 16 counties in the state qualify for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for damage left by the aftermath of Hurricane Ike that swept through the area in September. Among these counties are Izard and Sharp. The other counties are Carroll, Clay, Craighead, Greene, Hempstead, Howard, Lafayette, Lawrence, Little River, Madison, Miller, Newton, Randolph and Van Buren.
This declaration allows state and local agencies to receive funds for repairs. The funding does not include repairs for individual storm victims.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav, 18 counties in Arkansas were awarded FEMA funding. Van Buren County is the only county to receive funding from both storms.
