Our nation's colors will soon be seen flying near the headstones of veterans' graves in honor of their service to their country. No doubt the U.S. flag will also be flying at events on Nov. 11 to honor those who have served in the Armed Forces in the past and those who are currently serving.
Salem will be celebrating Veterans Day with a barbecue lunch at noon at the Veterans Memorial next to the Salem V.F.W. Post just off Highway 9 North behind the old shirt factory. State Rep. David Cook and Curren Everett will be serving the meal. The cost is $4.
Melbourne is also doing their part to honor veterans on Veterans Day. That day at 10 a.m. the Izard County Veterans Association and the Melbourne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4687 will have a ceremony at the new Melbourne High School Gym. The master of ceremonies at this event will be Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence. The guest speaker will be Dan Massey, who is a Vietnam veteran and a Purple Heart recipient. The band will also perform and there will be several other events at the ceremony.
